FROM ITS MEGALITHIC TREASURES TO THE MONUMENTAL PATRIMONY AND REFASHIONED TRADITIONAL GASTRONOMY, THE MUNICIPALITY REVEALS ITSELF TO BE A TRIP NOT TO BE MISSED.
When arriving in Évora, the scenery is reflected in the fine gastronomy and in the regional handicrafts. Be it through the making of olive oil, wine or game hunting, Évora gets recognized for the creativity of its knowledges and flavours, as if reinventing Alentejo’s cuisine.
In between the forests of holm and cork trees and the grazing fields, olive tree orchards, vineyards and irrigation cultures watered by the Alqueva river, one can find monuments such as the Almendres megalithic compound or the Zambujeiro’s Big Dolmen, that place Évora’s region among the most important megalithic locations in Europe.
Évora’s Historical Centre – a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1986 – consolidated the city as the main touristic attraction in the region. The historical memories of every street remain tucked in within the perimeter of its beautiful fortifications, renovated throughout the times by the people that have conquered and inhabited this territory. It’s millennia of History that Évora has known to preserve, crossing the past with a live, modern and dynamic present.
This caring spirit, allied to the strong cultural element that has marked the town’s life in the last few years, lead to an important compromise from the entire society: the candidature to European Capital of Culture in 2027.
