THE MUNICIPALITY OF PENAMACOR IS PART OF THE TERRITORY OF THE EUROPEAN CHARTER OF SUSTAINABLE TOURISM – LANDS OF THE LYNX, AWARDED BY EUROPARC FEDERATION, AND THE GEOPARK NATURTEJO.
Located in the oldest European’s border line, the border village of Penamacor was one of the advanced sentinels of the Portuguese territory in the north of Tagus River, since the dawn of the nationality. Nevertheless, the territory has a vast and rich historical, archaeological, and ethnographic built heritage, that extends from the Neolithic to the present days.
The impressive dungeon tower and the old convent of Santo António are two of the region’s ex-libris. The cruciform symbols that dot the streets of Penamacor and Bemposta remind us of the ethnic and religious diversity, with the presence of the Jewish and the converts within the territory.
The religious traditions from the Lent to the pilgrimages prove that the old habits are deeply established, as well as the tradition of Madeiro (bonfire), whose origins are millenarian.
Besides the cultural heritage, one can also find in the municipality of Penamacor an extremely wide natural heritage, marked by geo-sites of touristic and scientific interest, having the largest part of Reserva Natural da Serra da Malcata (Serra da Malcata Nature Reserve) as part of the territory.
