TOMAR GUIDE: WHAT TO SEE, DO, WHERE TO EAT AND SLEEP

HISTORY, CULTURE, TRADITIONS AND NATURE GOT HERE TOGETHER TO CREATE ONE OF PORTUGAL’S MOST BEAUTIFUL TOWNS. TO VISIT TOMAR IS TO LET YOURSELF BE GUIDED BY YOUR SENSES.

Tomar is Portugal Templar’s bastion, which integrates a valuable historical legacy, highlighted by the monumental setting composed by the Castle and Christ’s Convent, that merited UNESCO’s classification as a World Heritage site.

But its vast build-up heritage is not limited to this cluster, with much more inserted in the well-preserved historical centre, presently boiling with life and new ideas.

The synagogue, one of the best preserved in the Iberian Peninsula, is one of the main points of interest. The churches of St. John the Baptist and of Santa Maria do Olival hold valuable collections of Art and historical artifacts; in each corner there is a remarkable window, an old portico, a chapel.

All this is enshrined by an equally relevant immaterial patrimony, of which the Festa dos Tabuleiros (Trays’ Festival), the only event of its kind worldwide, is the highpoint.

Tomar is also a land of flavours; one must try the Fatias de Tomar (‘Slices’) as well as other confectionery products of conventual origin. Tomar waits for you!
