Those who visit Madeira and don’t go for a walk in a levada, or at least in a vereda in the mountain, leave their trip incomplete.
Throughout centuries, people from Madeira built kilometers of levadas, a truly heroic job, bearing in mind the topography and dimension of the island. The canals carry the water from the springs and are fundamental for farming and as supply for the population. Currently, levadas are also a tourist attraction much sought-after by hiking lovers or for activities in the wild. They offer excellent walks through the luxuriant forest and the rural landscapes of Madeira. Some canals have dozens of kilometers, but one small part of the trail is enough to feel the beauty of the whole enterprise.
An unforgettable route that reveals both
the endemic vegetation and that which was introduced after the discovery of the
island. At first, you’ll still see the villages, but once you dive in the
interior of the forest, you’ll discover a luxurious path that has more than
five centuries.
