Some 200 years ago the tobogã (or basket car) was a form of public transportation, carrying the good people of Monte down to Funchal. Now it’s a tourist attraction.
It’s a matter for vertigo and speed. Downhill, from Monte to Funchal, the basket cars (or tobogãs) have survived the centuries. Made of wood and wicker, ready to accommodate two passengers and run by another two very skilled and wise drivers, the tobogã goes down in a fierce ride for about 2 km, pulled, pushed and having the driver’s feet on the asphalt for the only brakes available.
A cable car brings you back up, just in case you want to repeat the experience. And you will. By Monte, the offer is an iconic vision of Madeira, its beauties and promises. By the end of day, none of them will be left to keep.
