Who has never gone, on purpose, to Vila Franca de Xira to enjoy a great meal, can cast the first stone! Or instead, bring yourself to this municipality as soon as possible, to try out one of the ten restaurants that we recommend. As you can imagine, from a land with such strong connections to the river, to fishing and to rural activities, the main ingredients at the table will include freshwater fish, good meat, codfish, Leziria-type melon, and of course, Encostas de Xira wine. If the objective is not to miss the local specialties – such as shad, that spawns in the Spring, along the banks of the Tejo – the best will be to come in March, during the “Shad Month”. On the other hand, the Torricado with Grilled Codfish is a dish served all year-round, although the local County dedicates a festival in its honor during November.
In Vila Franca de
Xira’s town center, the 150 Gramas surprises dinners with its own version of
torricado, the typical dish of the
campinos, the local bull handlers; with a modern setting, but still keeping
faithful to the old tavern ambiance.
