WITH THE LARGEST EXTENSION OF BEACHES IN PORTUGAL AND PRAIRIES SPREADING BEYOND SIGHT, THE MUNICIPALITY IS CELEBRATED FOR ITS ‘CALL FOR LIBERTY’.
Forever connected to one of the most important historic events in Portugal, the April 25th, 1974 Revolution, “Grândola, Vila Morena” – the censored revolutionary song that, when played on public radio on that date, gave the go-ahead to the military movement – became by its own merit, a symbol of liberty and of the implantation of such a noble value as Democracy. Forty six years have gone by and although the historic patrimony remains well alive, its relevance has not yet exhausted.
Valued by its notable diversity, the council satisfies the curiosity of many throughout the seasons and for very distinctive reasons. Take a trip into this magnificent territory with more than 200 thousand acres, just an hour away from Lisbon, and you will discover the several faces of this hidden paradise. Are you a lover of beach vacations or camping? Sharpen up the appetite of your friends when you tell them that you have tasted the flavors of Alentejo while dining by the sea, in typical restaurants or ‘authored’ cuisine ones; or about your wine tasting experience, and the exclusive wine selection tasted right at the many cellars located throughout the municipality. Bring them back examples of local pastries, such as the rose cake or the pine nut hard candy.
If you enjoy historic facts and ancient patrimony, you cannot miss the monuments and artistic accomplishments relating to the ‘Revolution of the Carnations’, executed by several recognized Portuguese authors. Travel past relevant archaeological sites, visiting the remains left from the megalithic era right up to the twentieth century; stop at the Roman Ruins of Tróia – the largest fish salting industrial site in all the Roman Empire – or the archaeological industrial operation at Mining Village of Lousal. For sport and nature enthusiasts, there are walking tours, dolphin and bird watching, surf, Stand Up Paddle, horseback riding, golf or scuba diving, activities that you will find difficult to ignore and that will astonish you. Grândola is a true world by itself; get set, because you’ll want to come back for more!
